Neil Grover, Water Street Bring Seasoned Acoustic Performances to The Balcony Showcase

We’ve been hanging a lot around Bethlehem lately, and we found ourselves ready to branch back out and find adventure on Friday night. Fortunately, there was plenty going on this brisk and refreshing evening, and our travels found us at Bangor’s Broadway Pub.

That’s where The Balcony Show – who you can hear every Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET on WLVU: The Sound of the Underground – was hosting its Balcony Showcase, an acoustic series taking place periodically inside of this quaint tavern. Ready to showcase their talents on this night were singer-songwriter Neil Grover, who will be performing at another “series” in South Bethlehem this coming Friday, and Water Street, a pop rock band emanating from nearby Blairstown, NJ in Warren County.

002Grover was first up. We’ve seen Neil perform a solid handful of times by now, and each time out, he seems to become a more seasoned and dynamic performer. The strength of his growing catalog of original material is apparent, and his growth as an artist is hallmarked how some of his older material has evolved. One example of this is Grover’s early single, “Under My Body,” which the singer has started performing self-accompanied on keyboard. The switch over from acoustic guitar supports “Under My Body” with a more dramatic and sensual edge, and helps Grover bring out the song’s true emotion.

Soon after Neil’s set concluded with noteworthy new single, “Whoa,” Water Street set up and performed a stripped-down set of mostly original material, rooted in the spirit of acoustic pop giants like Ed Sheeran and Jason Mraz.

This was our first time hearing Water Street perform live, and they proved to be yet another thrilling example of the young talent emerging in the region. Their tight instrumentation is the stuff of veteran performers, and guitarist/lead vocalist Dave Paulson’s voice and overall presence calls a young James Taylor to mind. For sure, we look forward to seeing more of Water Street going forward, and we predict that they could have big opportunities in their future.

The next Balcony Showcase will take place on Friday, October 13 at Broadway Pub. Follow The Balcony Show and WLVU on Facebook for updates.
