It’s a Dog’s Life: Matt Mays (and Rhuby) Star in ‘Talkin’ to the Sky’

Through all of the stories of feeling cooped up throughout the pandemic, have any of us stopped to consider how the dogs feel right now?
Matt Mays has. In fact, his latest album Dog City was written entirely from the perspective of a rescue dog. Mays challenged himself to write and produce the record as the world went into lockdown, releasing it to Bandcamp in May, before sharing it worldwide to streaming platforms and on vinyl in August and September, respectively.
“(The songs are) about pure freedom, love, contentment, companionship and all the stuff in between,” Mays said. “I wrote every note and lyric over the last six weeks in confinement, in my cold garage and a few other empty spaces. Except for the Stooges cover.”
With that, let’s dive into the video for “Talkin’ to the Sky.” A collaboration between Mays and his friends Leah Fay and Peter Dreimanis of July Talk, the video depicts his dog, Rhuby, reminiscing on a rainy day about times spent playing and frolicking with her human — letting us know that we’re not alone in our feelings of confinement.
“Leah and Peter are some of the most magical people I’ve ever met, so when they approached me to make the video, I was over the moon,” Mays said. “The song — I hope — reflects all the mixed feelings we all have these days, and we wanted the video to evoke the same, but introduce that glimmer of light at the end, of the beach, that everyone deserves to see again soon.”
Hopefully, we’re all out frolicking and playing again in no time. Until then, take this journey with Matt and Rhuby below!
