WATCH: M. Byrd Greets the ‘Morning Sun’

Rise and shine!
Since releasing his debut single, “Mountain,” in 2020, M. Byrd has quickly captured the imaginations of those in the indie folk space. The 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist — whose story originates “somewhere between Amsterdam and Paris” — has compiled nearly two million Spotify streams from his debut single and its follow-up.
That follow-up? It’s “Morning Sun,” a new single whose mellow, acoustic guitar-driven soundscape creates a hypnotic, meditative groove for the listener. The slow-burning new tune symbolizes the rising morning sun, as it breaks through the haze of the morning fog.
“‘Morning Sun’ has become a kind of morning mantra for me,” M. Byrd said. “The idea came to me a few years ago in the morning right after I got up, and it came back to me subsequently over and over again, like a kind of entry into meditation, until I finally recorded it and arranged it into form.”
“Morning Sun” is accompanied by a music video featuring the fluid movements of dancer and choreographer Rose Marie Lindstrøm, who “interprets the song as a ritual awakening after an aimless search in the fog, as the desire for the redeeming breath underwater.”
Having spent time on the road as the touring bassist for German musician Ilgen-Nur, the 25-year-old M. Byrd possesses a great sense of worldliness and self-understanding rare for someone so young. We can expect those traits to show up through art, as he continues to release new music throughout 2021.
“I spent many years soaking up personal and musical experiences, and I’ve been learning a lot in different studios and touring situations,” he said. “The music I make is thus inspired by being on the road, moving on and allowing growth to happen. I realized that the experiences on my path might also inspire other people, and I hope that this will continue in the future with the songs we release.”
