Songs You Should Hear: Oh My God, You Better ‘Run!’

Happy February! There might be about six more weeks of winter to “look forward” to, but there are plenty of hot jams dropping all around us to help warm up the atmosphere.

I went through and picked a few that I’m digging to kick off your weekend. Come on in and take a listen!

Artist: Emanuel Casablanca
Song: Blood on My Hands
Genre: Blues
Why you should hear it: If you love scorching-hot blues, this one’s for you. Casablanca’s resume is impressive enough; he’s performed internationally at prominent festivals including Berlin Music Week, Isle of Wight Festival, Kommune2010, SXSW, and NXNE. On “Blood on My Hands,” he adds even more firepower by welcoming renowned blues guitarist Eric Gales to add his flair to the track.

Artist: Forts Like Vana
Song: OVER IT
Genre: Pop/rock
Why you should hear it: This is a darker, more pensive Forts Like Vana than we’ve known before. “OVER IT” takes us, in slow motion, through a downfall of a relationship in turmoil. There’s also, in our estimation, a decent chance you’ll hear this one if you come to The High Watt tonight. Stop by if you’re in Nashville!

Artist: Our Lady Peace
Song: Run
Genre: Rock
Why you should hear it: Spiritual Machines II — the long-awaited sequel to the band’s iconic 2000 concept album, Spiritual Machines — dropped last Friday. As someone who’s been a fan of OLP for 20 years now, I’m stoked for the entire record, which honors the futurist themes presented on the original, while refreshing them with a modern, optimistic sensibility. “Run” is one of its signature songs; this bouncy anthem holds up well across the band’s catalog, with a bass groove that recalls “Naveed” and a fiery bombast akin to “Monkey Brains,” from 2009’s Burn Burn.

What do you think we should hear? You’re always welcome to let us know! And, if you’re an artist (or represent an artist), you can fill out one of these forms to put your music on our radar!
