Founder’s Picks: Best Song of 2016

First, let me start by saying that this category, like all of them, could have gone a number of ways. For example, I could have chosen a song with the grit of Roi & the Secret People’s “Hungry.” Just as tempting was the prospect of choosing VoirVoir’s youthful anthem, “I Wanna,” or virtually any track from Rofo Audio. In the end, however, I went a bit south to Philly, where The Wayside Shakeup released their single, “Stay Up,” earlier this year.

BONUS VIDEO: The Wayside Shakeup Performs ‘Stay Up’

Many of us on the music scene can relate to a song like The Wayside Shakeup’s “Stay Up.” We’re often out late, doing what we love, meanwhile someone waits patiently (or impatiently) at home for us to finish for the evening. As someone who had a special lady waiting for me as I attended the band’s show at MilkBoy last Friday, this song certainly speaks to me.

Naturally, then, you can imagine my excitement when they transitioned into the new single during their set. I was so taken in by the moment that I just had to hit record!

Consider this just a sample of the band’s great live show, which you need to make sure you see if you haven’t yet. They’re as tight a band as you’ll hear on the indie scene and, as an added bonus, they’re super cool to work with!

PHOTOS: The Wayside Shakeup at MilkBoy Philly

It felt great to be back in Philadelphia as The Wayside Shakeup opened up for Animal Years and Wild Adriatic at MilkBoy. The band’s set was tight as the guys played selections from their entire catalog, including their newest single, “Stay Up,” and selections from their funky “Private Party” EP.

Overall, Wayside’s set was a fun beginning to a great night of indie music in the City of Brotherly Love. Enjoy some photos from our night on the town, and be prepared for an extra treat from the show in the coming days.

Artist: The Wayside Shakeup
Album: Private Party EP (LISTEN)
Released: 2015
Genre: Funk/Rock

Those who know The Wayside Shakeup know that they’re a versatile group of guys, each with distinctive musical tastes. Their most recent EP, “Private Party,” sees them use their talents to delve into the world of funk with the savvy of genre veterans.

This EP will get you up and moving from the start, beginning with the fast and fun title track. Indeed, “Private Party” sets the tone for a good time to come before heading into the groovy dance rock tune, “Silence is Your Soundtrack.” We then flow quite easily into the sunny “Finally Looking Up,” which laces jazz undertones and a fun chorus together to make even the biggest skeptics feel optimistic.

Things get very interesting on EP closer, “Wear You Down,” a six-and-a-half-minute romp that, in addition to funk, gives nods to 80s synth pop and Wayside’s trademark roots rock. This track is truly a journey, with a spacey, acoustic-based bridge that builds to the EP’s sonically climactic, feel-good ending.

If you haven’t been, now is a good time to begin following The Wayside Shakeup. The band proves on its “Private Party EP” that it has only just begun to tap into its potential. Let this EP serve as an introduction to their capabilities.
