Keith Evan Gay Salutes Georgia Football with “Only One Dawg in this Fight.”

On New Year’s Eve, the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs will continue their quest to become back-to-back NCAA FBS National Champions when they take on Ohio State in the Peach Bowl.

Georgia native Keith Evan Gay is ready, with a rallying cry for Bulldog Nation in advance of the College Football Playoff.

Keith’s new single – “Only One Dawg in this Fight” – is an ode to all things Georgia football. The rocking country tune was released on December 30, 2022, and contains several nods to the historic program as it sets out to make history. There’s even a line in tribute to Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, where Keith sings, “Kirby’s bringing his game and it would be a shame if anyone got in his way.”

“It was something that was on my mind for a couple years. I just never pulled the trigger on it, but I was very inspired when I wrote it.” Keith said. “Last year, we had a great run and won the title, and my buddy Cy (Yaegel) had a different song with a line in it that said, ‘only one dog in this fight.’ I thought that’d be an awesome title for a Georgia Bulldog song.”

The single, written alongside Yaegel and John Palmer, remained as merely an idea until about halfway through the Bulldogs’ undefeated 2022 regular season. The Georgia native woke up with the melody in his head one night at 3 a.m. – just hours before he was scheduled to record at Dave McAfee Productions. He then proceeded to walk outside, sit in his truck, and pen the lyrics in time for his session.

“I called Dave on the way over there and said that I had another song idea,” Keith noted. “That was the first time I had done it. We did the scratch vocal, changed a few of the words the next day, and laid it down.”

An all-star ensemble of session musicians helped bring “Only One Dawg in this Fight” to life. They include longtime Toby Keith collaborators like McAfee (drums), Dave Smith (guitar/banjo/backing vocals), and bassist Dink Cook, alongside keyboardist Kevin Adams and Josh Bertrand (steel guitar).

Keith hopes “Only One Dawg in this Fight” can serve as an anthem for DawgNation – not just in the weeks ahead, but for many years to come.

“As an artist, you want to hear your songs on the radio. All of that is really cool, but more than anything, I would love to perform that for a bunch of Bulldog fans,” Keith said. “I could envision the team playing that in the locker room before they go out on the field and getting fired up. It’s something that I hope the fans can have as a ritual; that we play that song before the game starts.”
